I believe the sexual and mental manipulation I experienced over the years happened because this person wanted to have control over me and take advantage of my trust, feelings, and vulnerability. I believe he used manipulation to influence my thoughts, emotions, and decisions in ways that benefited him, without considering the harm he was causing me.
When I look back on the years I was in communication with this man, a lot of it is blurry. I can only remember certain moments and specific things that happened on certain days. There are parts of that time in my life that I struggle to piece together, but the things I do remember have stayed with me.
For years, he had me wrapped around his finger. I thought I had found a safe space with someone I could trust, but it was not safe. I remember talking to him when I was younger, around eighth grade. He would tell me how much I needed him and that we could tell each other anything. We would send photos back and forth, and he gave me the attention I had always wanted. At that age, I did not fully understand what was happening or how much influence he was gaining over me. We became extremely close, talking for hours every day. Over time, it felt like I could not pull myself away from him. He knew how to reach me mentally and emotionally, and he knew exactly what to say to get the response he wanted from me.
As the years went on, he would persuade me into situations where he had control, and I believe he knew the power he had over me. What I once thought was a close connection became something that left me feeling trapped. He knew my vulnerabilities and used the trust I had in him to his advantage.
Around my junior and senior years of high school, things became much more aggressive. I had entered a new relationship, and he did not like that. He seemed to believe he was entitled to my time, attention, and body, even though I was in another relationship. He could do what he wanted, but I felt I had to remain available to him. Despite being in a relationship with someone else, I continued to secretly communicate with him, meet up with him, and send nude photos. I felt caught in a cycle that I did not know how to escape.
His words became threatening and controlling. He would tell me things like, “You have to,” “I know everything,” “You can't get rid of me,” and “After all this time, you can just leave?” Those words made me feel as though I had no choice and could not walk away from him. The relationship no longer felt like the connection I had once believed it to be. When we met up, the affection and love I thought had existed were gone. Over time, the encounters became increasingly aggressive and violent. He held me down, slapped me, and choked me until I saw stars. These experiences were frightening and harmful, and they changed the way I understood what I had once mistaken for closeness.
Looking back, I believe he used the trust I placed in him when I was young to create a sense of dependence and control. He made me feel like I needed him, and over the years, it became increasingly difficult to separate what I wanted from what he wanted me to do. I believe he took advantage of my vulnerability and used the history between us to make me feel obligated to stay. I was made to feel responsible for a connection in which my own safety, feelings, and boundaries were not respected.
Today, the effects of these experiences continue to impact how I view myself, how I understand relationships, and how I process things mentally and physically. Throughout my life, I have often felt as though I have been treated like an object rather than a person. It seems that there is always someone making comments about my body or what they believe they are entitled to from me. These experiences have affected how I feel about myself and have made it difficult to separate my worth as a person from the way others have treated me.
One of the most confusing and painful parts of this experience is feeling like the people who have caused harm in my life can simply walk away without carrying any of the weight of what they have done. I am left carrying that weight in my mind, revisiting memories, trying to understand what happened, and living with the emotional consequences. It is difficult to accept that someone can have such a lasting impact on another person's life and seemingly continue on with their own.
For years, I pushed these experiences aside because I did not want to think about them. I tried to sweep everything under the rug and keep moving forward, but avoiding the memories has not erased their impact. I am still trying to understand what happened to me, process the emotions attached to it, and heal from the years of manipulation and abuse.
I believe the choices he made were his responsibility. No matter how close we were, how long we had known each other, or how much trust I placed in him, I did not deserve to be manipulated, threatened, or physically harmed. Being young and trusting someone did not give him the right to take advantage of me. I should never have had to experience any of this.
I wrote this statement because I no longer want to keep my experiences bottled up or feel like I have to stay silent about what happened to me. I want my story to be heard, not only for myself but for anyone who may have experienced something similar. I want others to know that they are not alone, that what happened to them was not their fault, and that they deserve to be heard, respected, and supported. Sometimes sharing your story is the first step toward healing, and I hope mine reminds someone that they are never alone.
I cannot change what happened to me, but I deserve the opportunity to move forward without carrying shame for someone else's actions. I deserve to feel safe, respected, and in control of my own life. I deserve to be seen as a person, not an object, and to have relationships built on genuine care, respect, and trust. What happened to me is part of my story, but it does not define my worth or determine the rest of my life.
